About Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a name for a group of steroid compounds, soluble in fats, which exert powerful effects on the human body, and whose receptors are found in various organs. Approximately 80–90% of Vitamin D derives from sunlight-induced production in the skin. If you don’t spend enough time exposed to sunlight, your vitamin D levels might be low. A small amount of the body’s total vitamin D is also derived from diet (plants, fungi, fatty fish or cod-liver oil) and/or supplements.

Some people with low vitamin D levels may not present any symptoms. Others may present with low energy, muscle aches and pains, depression (especially in the winter) or getting sick frequently. It is important to test your Vitamin D levels because up to 80% of the population have low vitamin D levels which may affect fertility and pregnancy. Learn more about Vitamin D.
