After the egg is released from the follicle (ovulation), the corpus luteum starts producing progesterone. This is an important steroid hormone that prepares the uterus for implantation and supports the pregnancy. If your progesterone levels are low, the the embryo may not be able to implant in the uterus, resulting in a short luteal phase and/or miscarriage. In this situation, you may be prescribed progesterone medication to prepare the uterus for implantation and support a pregnancy.
