About Beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone, often called the pregnancy hormone, is initially made by the lining cells of the embryo and later by the cells of the placenta. This test is very sensitive and can detect very low levels of hCG, telling you if you are pregnant about six to eight days after you ovulate, which is earlier than an over-the-counter urine pregnancy test.

A negative result however, does not necessarily mean that you are not pregnant, especially if you tested early or ovulated late. A repeat test is recommended if your period has not arrived after another 3 days.

The hCG levels increase quickly in pregnancy and the test can be done every other day to confirm the pregnancy is progressing as expected. Levels reach a peak between 9 and 12 weeks of pregnancy. It then starts declining until it remains steady for the rest of the pregnancy.
